background

Vuka Salama is a school road safety partnership initiative run by Los Ninos Ltd, a locally registered social enterprise designed to support the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) core mission and road safety agenda. The initiative falls under the broader NTSA Usalama Barabarani road safety campaign. Road safety is a shared responsibility and the Vuka Salama initiative brings private sector resources to complement the public sector programmes to achieve safer road use behaviour and culture among primary age school children in Kenya.

Addvice Promotions Ltd. among other private sector actors is one of the companies that participated in the partnership through financial and in kind contributions including all the merchandise, road safety materials and logistical arrangements.

The inaugural Vuka Salama programme took place at Kimorori Primary School which was graced by the attendance of the Directo rGeneral, NTSA, Mr. George Njao and his team, the representatives from County Ministry of Education and the County Administration. The following was achieved:

Activity 1: Activation and training

Interactive awareness and training session targeting the children and road safety school marshals. This was achieved through the two-day programme:

  •  day-one targeting grades 2 and 3, a population of 300;
  • day-two where all 1,500 learners and all teachers were sensitized.

Activity 2: Provision of road safety materials

The following materials were handed over:

  • 290 reflective branded bags for the two target grades 2 and 3.
  • Road safety posters for classrooms (30 posters mounted in classrooms)
  • Lollipop signs for marshals (4)
  • Road signs – Slow Down School Ahead (2 signs)
  • Reflective Jackets for student leaders and road marshals (6 jackets)

Activity 3:  Introduction of Road Safety Club

The concept was shared to extend learning beyond single events and include sustained refresher training. This would require one teachers assume the role of the club master and with selected class road safety ambassadors refresher sessions can be arranged as part of after school extracurricular activities.

Activity 4: Advocate for road safety signage and infrastructure

The event provided the opportunity to bring to the attention of the NTSA team the need for the installation of road safety signage, safety marking on roads and an elevated footbridge for use by the school and entire community.
